This today they will leave Spring Camp for Trail Camp Six miles ahead.  They will start the day on the North slope of a giant drainage and spend a good part of the day traversing clockwise around to the head of the valley. They will pass to the East side of the cascade crest at Granite Pass and then back to the West side of the crest at Cutthroat Pass as they reach the South side of the drainage. Then a few downhill switchbacks and there they are at Trail Camp.

I did this hike in July of 1981. In the photo you can see the trail clearly traversing under Tower Mountain as it swings around from Methow Pass at the far left.  About a third of the way across the traverse where you see the snow meeting the trail is where they camped last night at Spring Camp. Obviously, they saw little or no snow being a month or more later in the year than when this photo was shot.kak052-b
